The external cylindrical grinding machines of the GPW/GAW series are one of the most successful creations for the production of medium-sized components for cars, motorcycles and hydraulic components, the result of OKUMA’s consolidated experience in these sectors, a leading manufacturer in the world.

The particular ease of use allows the machine to reach high levels of productivity even in the absence of specialized operators.

The machine structure with a single body for the base and table gives high rigidity, an accurate design has then allowed to achieve a perfect balance of the machine. Newly developed spindle made with high pressure hydrodynamic bearings which guarantee a max. rotation error. of 0.02 µm and a stiffness of 100 kg/µm, these characteristics allow high removal capacities.

Hydrodynamic bearings do not require contact with the shaft, therefore, they are not subject to wear. The grinding wheel head slides on ‘V’ and flat guides coated with anti-friction material to ensure accurate positioning and linear movement with a low friction coefficient.

The advancement of the grinding head is directly controlled by AC servo-motors via high precision ball screws; a resolution of 0.0001 mm allows for very high sensitivity in programming the processes. The workpiece head (max. speed 650 rpm), directly controlled by an AC servo-motor, the lifetime lubrication of the spindle bearings gives high reliability and allows maintenance to be reduced to a minimum.
